Start of the 2010 harvest
English
Texte:
The climatic conditions were perfect with only a half day of rain during the 6 days of the harvest. We have been surprised by the low harvest yield, particularly with the red parcels of Chassagne and the low hills. The 2 main causes seem to be the winter frost and the coulure during flowering. The berries are also small, the pulp very thick and the natural alcohol content is slightly above that of 2009 vintage.

The alcoholic fermentation of the white wine takes place in the barrels using natural yeasts, and lasts for about 3 weeks. The red wine is put in tanks for between 15 – 17 days with a cold pre-fermentation maceration, alternating pumping over and cap-punching. Maloclactic fermentations took place during winter, the last at the end of January.

They are taken from the soil by the drill, and then taken out of the vineyard to avoid contaminating the healthy vinestock. Harvest
English
Texte:
Chassagne-Montrachet premier cru Les Caillerets It was difficult to decide on the date for the start of the harvest due to the early, dry spring followed by a wet July, causing a non-uniform maturity. Tasting the berries around July 20 found that there was already a sugar/acid balance, agreeable in the mouth. We finally started on Saturday 27 August, in order to preserve the good levels of acidity, and to keep the best state of health possible in certain parcels of red more sensitive to Botrytis (low hills). Under a beautiful sun we started with the reds and followed with the whites, while the levels changed very little. The harvest was marked by low yields in red (due partly to the sorting), a little more in the whites, with good levels of acidity and degrees of alcohol, which were not overly strong.

Debudding

Texte:
The buds have evolved very little during April, due to low temperatures, weak sunshine and heavy rains. We have even had two episodes of frost and several hailstorms, but happily there was very little damage. The Chardonnay vinestock are at the stage 2-4 leaves unfolded; the Pinot Noir at the bud opening stage; around 15 days late given the stages at the beginning of April. The works during the ‘green season’ are the operations that complete the winter pruning so as to ensure the best balance between the vegetable part and the organs of production. We are starting the debudding this week: this first ‘green season’ work consists of removing the base-buds (missed at pruning because they were too small) pushing against the main buds, and cleaning the vinestock of ‘wild buds’. The aim is to keep the number of buds we want on each cut/cane. But we are careful in our intervention, due to the non-uniform growth of the buds.

Texte:
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru La Maltroie - LD Les Rebichets March has been globaly warm, what has accelerated the vegetal rythm of the plant. We can see few opened buds since the 21st in the Clos (des Murées, Saint Jean, Rebichets/La Maltroie), our earliest terroirs. We were really afraid about frost for few days, but we suffered only +1°C, what a relief ! We hope it will keep going on...

Happy harvest
English
Texte:
Complete team (pickers, winery and cooking staff) Pictures have missed this summer to write articles, as family has extended... Lison is borned 2nd of July, she is starting a new generation in our family. Summer briefly... We suffered hailstorm in Volnay and Pommard for the 3rdfolowwing year. Weather started to get worse from beginning of July, with little rainfalls and cool temperatures. The main element to remind is East wind that has blown strongly from end of August until the harvest, which concentrated a lot the berries. We started to pick on the 12th by reds, then the whites from the 14th. No rain at all during 7 days! We have been very surprised by the lack of juice, despite a nice flowering. But the wind turned in a good way, as balances and pH were absolutely perfect, especially in whites, and very homogeneous between all the diferent terroirs. Strong peach aromas where enhancing at pressing. We are near 2010 in volume and grappe quality, but with more acidity. Again a surprising harvest, unexpected, as we love! And it is especially a year that will keep being important to the family...

Volnay 1er cru Clos des Chênes The flowering is happening in excellent conditions, with a dry and warm weather. However we have lost inflorescences at the beginning of may, with large temperature differences between night and day. We also lament the fact that there are few infloresences in Volnay and Pommard, dut to the sress of the three consecutive years with hail.

Pommard 1er cru Les Rugiens The harvest is very close, and the grapes have perfect conditions for ripening within 15 next days. Maturity figures show the effects of the dry and warm summer, with small berries and low acidity level (malic acid). We are pleased with the very good sanitary state of the grapes, and with the perfect weather forecasts for the comming weeks. The first secateurs can be heard early september...

6 days of intense labor
English
Texte:
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru La Boudriotte The harvest is the final goal of one year work in the vines, inevitably linked to tiredness and stress with all the preparations to welcome 50 pickers in the best conditions. And as long as all the grapes are not brought in the cuverie, we are anxious to suffer hailstorm... In brief we are double-spoiled: no one hailstone on our land this vintage, and our team has been very efficient, again ! The optimal sanitary state and dry/cool weather have helped to cut all the crop in 6 days. We started the 1st of September with whites, for their advanced ripeness state compared to reds. Volumes are good, between 2013 and 2014 according to plots. End of august has been very warm, what made ripening quickly. Regarding acidities, we were expecting average levels after the warm summer, what has been confirmed on the whites. The reds have beautiful balances, but volumes are lower.

Frost
English
Texte:
Bâtard-Montrachet All our vines have been impacted by the frost on Wednesday the 27th of April. All the conditions were her: rainfalls during the night, and then negative temperatures at the sunrise. The damages caused by this frost are on an exceptional scale, even the top of the slopes. Red vines are a little less affected as they were less grown. Green works will be later and particularly harder as the secondary buds will grow within several weeks, and at variable rythms. Last frost was on vintage 1981.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru village rouge - Les Battaudes Flowering is ending this week with a beautiful sun. A lot of energy spent for saving what remains.

Harvest
English
Texte:
Le Montrachet It looks like we have rarely been so troubled to organise this harvest... How many barrels ? how many pickers ? frost plots will they ripe very quickly? Estimated volumes are so low than we have to understand this crop from a different perspective. Finally we decided to start on the 21st of September, by reds, which were more mature than whites. Reds have been less damaged by the frost, so the growth has been less slown down. The volumes are very different from a parcel to another, and unfortunately the yields are the lower in the Grands Crus. We already hear that "press" predicts a bad vintage, but the balances, or the soft peach aromas in the winery just let us smile... What a nice reward after all the damages suffered last April !

2016 was not an exception
English
Texte:
This picture doesnot show a fog, but the exceptional mobilisation from all the winegrowers to fight against frost. For about ten days, temperatures worry us and have already produced damages, especially in the regional area, but hopefully in low proportions. This morning, dozens of people have created a cloud of smoke by burning bales of straw, in order to protect the young sprouts from the first rays of sun. Temperatures reached -2°C, and we are satisfied with this system which proved its efficiency. After this new frost event, we will understand differently that problem. We were wishing that 2016 would be an exception, but we realise that the climate does not evolve on our side...

Flowering
English
Texte:
Bourgogne rouge - LD Longbois à Volnay Weather in May has been very favourable to the vines growth, with warm temperatures, and few showers. We passed through several hail storms, whew ! The branches growth is explosive, and flowering is almost already finished, even in the areas affected by frost. We are very happy with that vigor, what gives us a intense rythm of work, but so pleasant. During vintage 2016 - very damaged by frost - tying up vines was laborious, with very diferent sizes of branches, growing so slowly.
