Debudding

Texte:
The buds have evolved very little during April, due to low temperatures, weak sunshine and heavy rains. We have even had two episodes of frost and several hailstorms, but happily there was very little damage. The Chardonnay vinestock are at the stage 2-4 leaves unfolded; the Pinot Noir at the bud opening stage; around 15 days late given the stages at the beginning of April. The works during the ‘green season’ are the operations that complete the winter pruning so as to ensure the best balance between the vegetable part and the organs of production. We are starting the debudding this week: this first ‘green season’ work consists of removing the base-buds (missed at pruning because they were too small) pushing against the main buds, and cleaning the vinestock of ‘wild buds’. The aim is to keep the number of buds we want on each cut/cane. But we are careful in our intervention, due to the non-uniform growth of the buds.
